Install OnTiv on Android TV and Fire TV

OnTiv runs in any modern browser, but on a television an installed app is far more comfortable than typing into a browser. OnTiv for Android is available as a direct download, and installing it on a TV takes a few minutes with a free helper app called Downloader. The steps below cover Android TV, Google TV and Amazon Fire TV.

What you need

  • An Android TV, Google TV or Fire TV device connected to the internet.
  • The free Downloader app, which fetches a file from a web address directly onto the TV.
  • Your remote.

Step 1: install Downloader

  1. On the TV's home screen, open the search (the magnifying glass).
  2. Search for Downloader (by AFTVnews) and install it from the Amazon Appstore on Fire TV, or from Google Play on Android TV / Google TV.

Step 2: allow Downloader to install apps

OnTiv for Android is distributed outside an app store, so the TV needs your permission to install it. The setting is called "install unknown apps" or "unknown sources", and its exact location depends on the device and software version.

  • Fire TV: Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options → Install unknown apps → turn on Downloader. (On older Fire OS versions this is "Apps from Unknown Sources".)
  • Android TV / Google TV: Settings → Apps (or Privacy / Device Preferences → Security & restrictions) → Install unknown apps → select Downloader and allow it. Some TVs ask for this the first time you try to install.

Step 3: download and install OnTiv

  1. Open Downloader and go to its Home tab.
  2. In the URL box, type ontiv.app/tv and select Go.
  3. Wait for the file to download, then choose Install when prompted.
  4. When the install finishes, choose Open, or find OnTiv in your app list.
  5. Optionally, delete the downloaded file when Downloader offers to; you do not need it any more.

Using OnTiv with a remote

The TV version has a layout built for remotes: use the directional pad to move between tiles and shelves, OK to select, and Back to go up a level. Typing a long playlist link with a TV remote is slow. An easier route is to set your playlist up once on a phone or computer, sign in, and use cross-device sync (a Premium feature) so your sources are waiting on the TV.

Other devices

  • Android phone or tablet: download the app from ontiv.app/apk and allow your browser or file manager to install it.
  • Windows: the desktop installer is at ontiv.app/win.
  • Any browser: nothing to install — open ontiv.app.

Troubleshooting

  • "For security, your device isn't allowed to install unknown apps from this source." Step 2 was not applied to Downloader. Go back and enable it.
  • The download stalls. Check the TV's network connection and try again.
  • The app installs but will not load your channels. That is a playlist matter, not an install matter. See how to load a playlist in OnTiv.

OnTiv is a media player. It doesn't provide, host, sell or recommend any channels, streams or playlists — only load content you have the right to access.
