Why OnTiv Stands Out

We built OnTiv because of a small, repeated frustration. You have a playlist you want to watch. You pick up a device — a laptop, a phone, the TV in the other room — and before anything plays, you hit a wall: download this app, sign in to that store, wait for an update, or discover the app doesn't exist for this screen at all. The watching was supposed to be the easy part. With OnTiv, we decided to remove the wall instead of decorating it. The player runs entirely in your browser, so any screen with a browser is already set up.

The wall every player puts in front of you

Think about what a typical streaming player asks of you before a single frame appears. Find the app in the store. Sign in with a store account. Download it, grant its permissions, and sit through the update it suddenly needs. Then repeat the whole routine on the next device, because the TV's store is not your phone's store, and neither one matches your laptop. Some screens — a work computer, a borrowed tablet, an older smart TV — can't install the app at all.

None of this is difficult, exactly. It is friction, repeated on every screen you own, standing between you and something you already have. We kept asking why the player needed to be installed at all, when every device already ships with a perfectly good runtime: the browser.

A player that lives in the browser

OnTiv runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to download, no app-store account to sign into, and no version of the app to keep updated — when we improve OnTiv, the improvement is simply there the next time you visit. Open the site, add your playlist, press play.

That one decision changes what "cross-platform" means in practice. The same player works on a laptop, a phone, a tablet, or the browser built into a smart TV, because it never depended on any of their app stores in the first place. The browser is the one app every device already has. We built the player there.

We're the player, not the provider

We are also clear about what OnTiv is. OnTiv is a player, not a provider: we don't supply content, and nothing comes bundled in. You bring your own M3U playlists (URL & file), and OnTiv gives you a clean, calm way to watch them — live TV, organised into categories, with your favorites kept close at hand.

The core player is free, and Premium is there for people who want the extras. That is the whole model: free core playback, honest Premium for the rest. We would rather explain the line between the two than blur it.

What OnTiv honestly is not

Honesty cuts both ways, so here is the other side. OnTiv has no bundled channels and no catalogue of its own — if you don't already have a playlist, OnTiv has nothing to play, and we would rather say that plainly than let you find out after signing up. It also needs a browser and an internet connection; it is not an offline app, and it is not a replacement for a content subscription.

If what you want is a service that hands you a library, that is a different product, and a fine one. OnTiv is for people who already have their playlists and simply want them playing, on whatever screen is nearest, without the installation ritual first.

How it compares

Install-based player apps include genuinely good software, and some of them do things a browser player doesn't — deeper device integration, offline downloads, page after page of settings. What they all ask in return is the installation: the account, the download, a separate version for every device, and updates for as long as you use them.

OnTiv makes the opposite trade: fewer knobs, zero setup. Which trade suits you depends on how you watch. If your watching usually starts with a playlist and whichever screen is closest, our side of the trade tends to feel lighter.

For a wider look at the field, our founder compared five cross-platform streaming apps — OnTiv included, judged in the open against the rest — in the founder's personal comparison of cross-platform streaming apps.

Try it

If you have a playlist and a browser, you already have everything OnTiv needs. Open OnTiv, add your playlist, and press play — that is the whole setup guide.

ON. Play. Repeat.

OnTiv is a media player. It doesn't provide, host, sell or recommend any channels, streams or playlists — only load content you have the right to access.
