M3U vs Xtream Codes vs Stalker Portal

IPTV providers hand out access in one of three common ways. They look different, behave differently, and give a player different amounts of information. Knowing which one you have saves a lot of guesswork when something does not load.

M3U / M3U8: a list of streams

The oldest and simplest option. You get one text file (or a link to one) that lists channels. There is no login: if you have the file, you can play it. That simplicity is also its limit — a playlist cannot describe movies, seasons or episodes in any structured way, and it only has a program guide if the file happens to point to one. New to the format? Read what an M3U playlist is.

Xtream Codes: a login to an API

Instead of a file, you get three details: a server address, a username and a password. A player uses them to ask the provider's server for everything — live categories, a movie library, series with seasons and episodes, posters and descriptions, and program-guide data. Because the player asks the server directly, the content is always current and well-organized.

Many providers also offer the same account as an M3U link. The M3U version works, but you lose the movie and series library, which is why a native Xtream Codes login is usually the better choice when you have one.

Stalker Portal: a login tied to a device

Stalker (also called Ministra) portals were built for set-top boxes. You receive a portal address, and the provider links your subscription to a MAC address — a device identifier — instead of a username and password. A player that supports Stalker imitates a set-top box using that MAC address. OnTiv supports Stalker Portal connections in its Windows desktop app.

Which should you use?

  • You have only a link or a file: use M3U. It is free in OnTiv.
  • Your provider gave you a server, username and password: use Xtream Codes for the fullest experience.
  • Your provider gave you a portal address and registered a MAC address: use Stalker Portal.
  • You have more than one option for the same service: choose Xtream Codes first, M3U second.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting a full link into the Xtream server field. The server field wants the base address only (for example http://example.com:8080), not a get.php playlist link.
  • Forgetting the port. Many providers use a non-standard port, and the address does not work without it.
  • Mixing up http and https. Use exactly what your provider gave you.
  • Extra spaces. A trailing space copied from an email is enough to make a login fail.

Keep credentials private

Whichever type you use, the link or login is the key to your subscription. Do not share it, post it in screenshots, or send it to anyone you do not trust. For how OnTiv handles the details you enter, see how OnTiv handles your privacy.

OnTiv is a media player. It doesn't provide, host, sell or recommend any channels, streams or playlists — only load content you have the right to access.
